Inaugural Old Tom Morris Competition - Tain Golf Club
10 July 2007

Direct descendants of the legendary Old Tom Morris were present at Tain Golf Club on Saturday 16th June for the inaugural Old Tom Morris Competition. The competition was held to mark the anniversary of Old Tom’s 186th birthday. Tain Golf Course was designed and constructed in 1890 by Old Tom Morris, who was four times Open Champion and the first Keeper of the Greens at St Andrews.

Other Old Tom Morris designed courses were invited to send representatives and a number of clubs, including clubs from Ireland, accepted the invitation. Prominent figures from golf, both local and national, were also invited and many played on the day. The competition was a four ball better ball and the two pairings with the lowest scores were locals Jonathan Fraser and Derek Wood (62) and Brian Mitchell and John Dundas (63). The prizes, which were donated by Tain Pottery, Melvyn Hector Morrow and Sheila Walker the great, great grandson and great, great granddaughter of Old Tom Morris, were presented by Sheila Walker. Tain Pottery also donated a beautiful trophy to the club, which is to be played for in the years to come.

It is hoped that each year from 2009, the competition will be played on a rota basis on other great Old Tom Morris courses. As 2008 is the Centenary of Old Tom’s death, the competition will be held again at Tain Golf Club.
