About Muir Of Ord Golf Club

Muir of Ord is a heathland/moorland 18 hole course situated fifteen miles north of Inverness and is only twenty miles from Inverness Airport. It is set in some stunning Scottish scenery with clear views of Ben Wyvis to the north and to the south may been seen the Beauly Firth and hills above Loch Ness.

The course has shown significant change and improvement since its inception in 1875. In the 1920’s the renowned golf course designer James Braid was engaged and much of what he altered and recommended remains intact to this day.

An interesting and challenging feature is the Inverness to Wick and Kyle of Lochalsh railway line which runs through the course adding to the golfers need for accuracy on a number of holes!   Wildlife abounds on the course and players may regularly see red kites soaring above the fairways.

Holes 1 to 4 are on the eastern side of the Inverness to Wick railway line and although they are relatively short par 4 holes for modern standards they are tricky holes due to having tight fairways and small greens.  Players then cross over the railway line to play holes 5 to 15.  These holes are a mix of par 3’s and par 4’s with a tough stretch of holes from the 8th hole to the 12th hole.  Golfers will do well to play this stretch of holes without having a card wrecking score.  The 12th hole is the signature hole on the course and is possibly one of the toughest par 3 holes in the north of Scotland.  With a yardage of 214 yards from the white tees players are faced with playing slightly downhill to a small green which is guarded by a bunker on the right hand side and a ditch that runs across the green 15 yards from the front of the green.

The 15th hole is the longest hole on the course measuring 478 yards and is a par 5 from our white tees.  Again although short for modern day standards there are numerous bunkers on the hole and to the left and behind the green is out of bounds which makes players make a decision if they go for the green in two or not if they have found the fairway with their tee shot.

After playing the 15th hole players will then cross back over the railway line where they will play the final 3 holes.  The 18th hole is a tough finishing hole measuring just over 400 yards with out of bounds to the left and behind the putting green.

On numerous holes around the course players will be greeted by the delightful sight of Ben Wyvis in the distance.
