The golf course at Portmahomack is situated on a fairly flat piece of land overlooking
the village. The terrain is of a seaside nature with humps and hollows. The turf
throughout the course is good on sandy soil which offers natural drainage.
The greens are fairly small making approach shots interesting and sometimes
challenging.
From the course there are beautiful views looking northwards over the village across
the Dornoch Firth to Dornoch, Golspie and Brora with the rolling Sutherland hills
providing a lovely backdrop.
We are a nine hole golf course although for the short 7th and short 16th there are
two completely different holes so we play ten different holes. On the other holes
alternative tees are used for the inward half.
The total yardage for the first nine holes is 2423 yards with the second nine
extending to 2457 yards. The par for the course is 68 made up of two nines of 34.
The village of Portmahomack is very picturesque lying on the south side of the
Dornoch Firth on the Tarbatness peninsula. Notwithstanding its situation on
Scotland’s east coast the village because of the way it lies on the peninsula uniquely
faces in a westerly direction therefore facing towards the sun for most of the day on
sunny days. There are many nice images of the village on the internet.
The village boasts a beautiful safe sandy beach and good harbour. Also a renowned
Pictish Museum in The Old Tarbat Church which is situated in the old churchyard
just behind the 8th green.
